The Louisiana Book by Rineke Dijkstra
's Bookshelf
"The Louisiana Book" is a photobook by Dutch female photographer Rineke Dijkstra.
Dijkstra, who studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, was influenced by the works of Richard Avedon and Irving Penn, but she resonated most strongly with Diane Arbus. In her search for new perspectives and expressions, she took self-portraits immediately after swimming in a pool, capturing a physically and mentally unstable state. She says this was the starting point for a series that continues to this day.
After that, she released works such as "Beach," which captured teenagers going through puberty; "New Mothers," which documented women immediately after childbirth; "Almerisa," which followed the growth of a single woman; and the video work "The Buzz Club," which filmed young people gathering in a club. She has shed light on instability and the process of change, expressing her originality as a photographer along with the individuality of her subjects.
This book was published on the occasion of a large retrospective exhibition held at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and the De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art in the Netherlands from 2017 to 2018. It is a large volume of over 300 pages, including the aforementioned representative works.
