Antique handwoven wicker basket - 20th Century Memorial Gift with handwritten inscription - 1926
This is a found item in the Southern Illinois area
Very unique piece with some genuine history attached!
Construction:
Handwoven wicker with a circular form. There is some obvious damage to some of the wicker due to age and it is very delicate.
Base Insert:
The base insert displays a pixel-like floral pattern reminiscent of cross-stitch or needlepoint that mimics traditional Eastern European or folk art designs. I believe it is a printed paper design under glass.
Bottom Base: The base appears to be a solid wood insert. There's visible aging in the wood (cracks, patina), and handwriting in pencil or pen on the bottom that references the year 1926.
The inscription I believe to read as follows:
"This basket was given to Etta May McAfee Sept 7th 1926 in remembrance of [or possibly 'as a gift remembering'] B. McAfee who departed this life the 12th of Aug 1926."
